The Next 5 Things You Should Do To Purge Your Closet

March 27, 2017

How often should you purge your closet?

I love to purge my closets.  It brings a sense of relief to clear things out.  I find that I need to purge a couple times of year when the seasons change.  Instead of thinking of it as more work, I like to think I am making room for new items I find and buy.

Do you know how it is when you get up in the morning to get ready and you can’t find the clothes you’re looking for?

It’s like sailing on a foggy see.  You know you are there and the clothes are there, but they seem to be lost.

Perhaps your closet space is small and it doesn't have room for all of the clothes and accessories that seem to pile up before our eyes.

Oftentimes closets are thought of as a storage space.  While that is mostly true, for your clothes that you wear every day, it is an active in and out place.  Garments go in and garments go out.  They are placed in a hamper when dirty and put away when clean.  So your closet is more than storage, it’s part of your morning routine.  It is a place where items are rotated daily and where you make daily decisions on what to wear.

Starting your day out right is important and your closet plays a role in how you feel in the morning.  If you are bogged down by clutter and unorganization, then you may start the day stressed.  On the other hand, if you can look into your closet and easily see and grab items, you may feel more peace and energy in the morning.

Starting to purge your closet is the first step to better mornings, better days, and an organized closet.

The Next 5 Things You Should Do To Purge Your Closet

1

Choose one section at a time so you don’t get overwhelmed.  For example; start with the top shelf in the space, or one rack of clothes.

2

For each section you will need sorting piles.  The piles are; one for trash, one for keep, one for donate.

3

Organize items you are keeping with containers, hooks, and labels.

4

Make it user friendly by installing enough bright lights, a step stool, and clear containers or labels.

5

Use hangers to your advantage.  Non-slip hangers keep garments from falling on the floor.  There are many types of hangers for accessories that will keep them organized.  Hangers that can hang multiple items vertically save space and help you see them better.

That’s all you need to get started.  Over time, you’ll learn how simple it is to stay organized and create systems that work for you and your family.

But, for now, just get started.
